We bundle the software into our service - you pay us and we pay the software provider. So, unless you already have a preference, we expect to steer you towards the program that suits you best. For most people that means you don't have to worry about which is the best value.

The UK is seen as the battleground between multi-national companies and this competition is improving the products apace..

Our emphasis on Bank integration is because we do not advise using non-direct feeds (passing login details to third parties breaks your banking agreement and could lose you compensation for fraud). As soon as the software companies and Banks get their act together on 'open banking' and APIs this will no longer be a problem.

Here is a little run-down of the front-runners

FreeAgent is a good choice if you bank with RBS, NatWest or Barclays, because the Bank Feed integrations are good (it is owned by RBS/NatWest and used to partner with Barclays)

Its other strength is ease of use. There are a few compromises on features but we think that the majority of straightforward businesses will not notice these (and we are here to help). We are also told that RBS is piling in investment.

We very much like being able to send out sales invoices online and letting the program chase up payments automatically, with acknowledgments for payments received.

At the end of the year, the data integrates with our TaxCalc Accounts and Tax Return production software.

For so long the market leader that has swallowed up competitors, Sage now finds itself challenged heavily. Likely to be first choice for larger businesses that need special functions.

The list of Banks from whom it accepts feeds is truly impressive !
